Fort Laudardale, FLORIDA: The US open cricket tournament will be held from November 24th to November 27th at the central Broward county stadium in Fort Lauderhill. This was announced by the chairman of the Cricket Council of USA, M. A. Qureshi while addressing a ceremony here on August 2, 2016.
- A. Qureshi, while addressing the audience, informed that the T20 cricket was introduced in the USA by the Cricket Council USA and today the game is being played in various states of the USA.
“We didn’t have a proper facility in the beginning but we are thankful to Broward County which provided us with a topnotch stadium”, said Qureshi
“We staged the first T20 event in 2008 with the name of MAQ T20 however later it was renamed to US Open”, added Qureshi, who said the event is a regular annual feature since then.
- A. Qureshi hoped that in this edition of the US Open, 28 teams, consist of local and foreign players, would be seen in action. He also has a plan to cope with the weather condition this time around.
“This year, there will be reserve days to compensate washout games”, said Qureshi
Meanwhile, the manager of the $100,000 US Open 2016, Sufyan said that in the past editions the likes of Shoaib Ak
htar, Sanath Jaysuria, Rajesh Sharma, Hershel Gibbs and Samuels etc had participated, and a number of international stars are being invited this years as well.
“We will soon release the names of the international stars from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, England, South Africa and the West Indies”, said Sufyan
The official of the Broward County stadium, Dan West also spoke on the occasion. He said, with the efforts of the Cricket Council USA, the game has been progressing day by day. The recent matches of the Caribbean Premier League acted as a catalyst and now the local fans are eagerly waiting for the WI-India series.
Gordon Tred Gold, specially come down from English county Yorkshire, shared his passion for cricket and recalled the double ton by Zaheer Abbas at the Edgbaston and his partnership with Mansoor Akhtar. He added that the current era is of the T20 and US open is touching new heights in the USA.
Two women representatives of the Florida House of Representatives were also present. They assured the Cricket Council USA of their support.
Former Pakistan Test cricketer Mansoor Akhtar also attended the ceremony.
